A Northwest Airlines Airbus A320 in flight, like the one that overshot the Minneapolis airport by 150 miles Oct. 21, 2009

Federal aviation authorities are investigating whether the pilots of a Northwest Airlines passenger jet fell asleep at the controls, causing them to lose radio contact and overshoot the Minneapolis airport by 150 miles.

The two pilots discovered their mistake after about an hour and turned the plane around, landing safely Wednesday evening. Air traffic controllers on the ground couldn't make contact with them as they flew past their destination.

Are you worried about air travel?

I need to use spell check. I can fly a plane, but can’t use the right there or thier. I was in a ruch to get out my story. Sorry!

The only possibility that answers all the questions as to the reason for the 150 mile overflight is that both the pilot and copilot are homosexual and were engaged in a homosexual encounter during the time when all communication was denied, even when flight attendants who knocked on the flight deck door were denied. If you do not investigate this you will just be another part of why we don’t get the right answers. If you want real answers to many of your questions about issuses taking place in our society, please get in touch. Thank you.

I am a commercial pilot with over 17,000 hours and have experienced just about every situation a flight crew would encounter. It’s preposterous for anyone to believe they were on their laptops or distracted in some fashion to overshoot their destination. They are trying to Protect their jobs. You don’t ignore air traffic control communication or lose track of your position. The sophisticated navigational equipment GPS ( global navigation system ) pinpoints your position over the earth within 50 to 100 feet. If they missed their hand off from air traffic control there is a procedure to identify the next sector frequency. I hope that Northwest/Delta Air Lines are not trying to make this go away because of bad publicity, they need to dismiss this crew to alert all personnel this is a dismissible offense.

    While I am wound up,

Maybe someone from Fox will ask Republic Airways why that they have a punitive action for pilots calling in sick. Not only is this against the interest of the public in normal times, but even with the high alert of H1N1, the airlines still frown on pilots calling in sick. That makes a lot of sense when the medial is asking the public not to fly if they feel they may be ill, but the airlines punish the crews if they stay home!

The Railroad Transportation Act along with other factors allow pilots to be overworked. The word regional allow the companies to get away with murder. There really is no such thing as regional anymore with the onset of the regional jet. These planes hold anywhere between 35 and 90 passengers and travel out of the country. That is not regional. I can only speak from my experience with the regional. I have been told that the majors are beggining to notice serious abuses of the laws as well.

Do another pole asking only pilots to give their take on this issue. The public loves juicy stories. Falling asleep is boring! Sex sells!

While I’m at this, please tell Dominica Davis I love her!! :)

It is far from friendly skies these days. From Airlines changing seats to changing planes, schedules and bumping passengers. Now pilots are fooling around instead of flying the plane. Makes one wonder if flying is a good travel option.

How long does it take for the airliner to travel 150 miles? I am sure that the investigators can verify the pilot’s statements regarding they using their laptops during the time of their flights.

How about “closet homosexuals?” Nothing says “sexual deviation” more than this!

  • George says:

With respect to our wayward pilots, notice that their final approach pattern nicely resembles a musical G Clef … and these guys are singing their song! How appropriate. For my money, I still believe they were asleep at the wheel(s)

Here is the bottom line; regardless of what excuse these pinhead pilots say – If proper protocol and procedure had been followed, this plane would have been shot down! Gives me real warm and fuzzy to fly…

  • Hurba says:

I have serious issues with flying, i don’t trust pilots anymore. I also feel like issues need to be dealt with for the air traffic controlers. Its a high stress job and they are overworked. With all of these issues there is no chance of me flying anytime soon, i haven’t flown in three years. Looks like its going to be a while until i get back up in the air.

  • Bruce says:

Yes I’m worried. If they can be so distracted while flying that they didn’t even hear the air-traffic control trying to reach them, what else might they miss during a flight? What would have happened if the computer was trying to show them that there was a problem with the plane? Would they have missed that too?

  • There is absolutely more to this story. It does not hold water and is an implausible answer.

  • There is absolutely more to this story that is certainly being told and maybe even hidden by Delta, the NTSB and the FAA (as well as the two offending aviators). The explanation given is implausible and every “seasoned’ Airline Pilot would agree that it just can’t happen the way they have said. There are too many alarms, notifiers and other means by which they could have been contacted. Something smells very bad about this?
