America’s Talking: 10/29

320_pelosi_APHouse Speaker Nancy Pelosi unveiled a retooled health care overhaul plan today intended to bridge differences among Democrats and open a history-making floor debate on extending health insurance to nearly all Americans.

Speaking on the West Front of the Capitol surrounded by Democratic lawmakers, Pelosi, D-Calif., said the House's version of a health care reform bill will include a government-run insurance option and extend coverage to 36 million uninsured Americans.  She said the bill will lower patient costs and reduce the national deficit.

Federal aviation authorities are investigating whether the pilots of a Northwest Airlines passenger jet fell asleep at the controls, causing them to lose radio contact and overshoot the Minneapolis airport by 150 miles.

The two pilots discovered their mistake after about an hour and turned the plane around, landing safely Wednesday evening. Air traffic controllers on the ground couldn't make contact with them as they flew past their destination.

America’s Talking 1 P.M. Question

Former President Clinton's selection to go to North Korea to negotiate the release of two U.S. journalists is raising some eyebrows inside the beltway. The fact that the Obama administration even chose to let Mr. Clinton go abroad, though the White House is calling this a solely private mission, may show that they are warming up to the idea of getting him involved.

Also this week, Clinton urged donors to the Democratic Party to pony up for health care and support Obama in the face of some of "the most powerful special interests in Washington."

America’s Talking 1 P.M. Question

USA CHINA/President Obama may have to raise taxes to pay for public health care and the growing deficit, an eventuality that administration officials touched lightly on Sunday as they promoted an economy emerging from recession.

With an expected deficit next year of $1.8 trillion, and spending still being planned for a $1 trillion, 10-year health care reform, officials say something will have to be done to prevent further erosion of the economy.
